This tour starts in Guadalajara’s train station, where a mariachi turns on the crowd waiting for the train with typical Mexican songs. Once inside the wagons, the tour guides of the excursion explain the process that this distilled spirit called Tequila goes through before arriving to the bottles that we have at home.
Guadalajara is a world-class city, where the most representative symbols of Mexico have their origins, like the mariachi, charrearía (rodeo’s parent), tequila and even the number one female golfer of the world Lorena Ochoa. And is in this very city where a government and private initiative have created the Tequila Express, which is a fusion of the railway with all these pillars of the Mexican culture.
During the expedition in the train you can appreciate plantations of blue agave, to which is extracted the juice; same that is distilled and fermented to elaborate the tequila. The landscape that can be observed during the tour was declared Human Heritage by the UNESCO in July 2006.
When you go down the train you are taken to a former hacienda where you can experiment the different stages of the process by which this national drink is taken. The first thing that calls attention when you arrive is the jimador or person that removes the leaves of the agave to leave only the plant’s heart. After tasting each distillation step and looking at the big ovens, you go to a place where you can have a delicious Mexican traditional dish with fresh flavor water while enjoying folkloric dance.
Something worth mentioning is the fact that during the whole tour you can drink as much tequila as you want, but you have to keep in mind that the important thing of the experience is to appreciate the Mexican culture with family or friends.
To this excursion assist groups of friends, families and foreigners as well. “It is very cool when you have the opportunity to see people from other countries appreciating the Mexican culture” comments Aranzazú Gómez, International Commerce graduate that enjoyed this unique experience.
“Without a doubt, the tour is an exceptional sample of Mexican richness and warmth” says the German specialist in social corporate responsibility Oliver Laasch.
The tickets can be bought through Ticketmaster, directly in the train station or through their website www.tequilaexpress.com.mx. They cost 950 pesos (around 77 USD) and 550 pesos (around 40 USD) for children under twelve.
